New Mexico (KRQE) – Running 100 miles isn’t something most people would ever attempt, but one Albuquerque man did just that to support the New Mexico Special Olympics team, who laced up and joined him for the final stretch of the race.
It was a challenging hundred miles and finish like no other. “The finish line of a 100-mile, it’s majestic, it’s magical, you’re seeing tons of human perseverance,” said Albuquerque ultra runner Adam Trubow.
He has been running 100-mile races since 2018; his first was the Leadville 100. He also runs them to raise money for the New Mexico Special Olympics team through “The 100 miles for 100 friends” campaign. Just last year, they raised $59,000. “It means a lot to us that he’s raising all that money that’s gonna help us get sent off to those games and making our New Mexico athletes more happier,” said Tim Harris, NM Special Olympics athlete.
This past weekend, Trubow ran the Leadville 100-mile race in Colorado with the help of special Olympic athletes. “To have the special Olympics team pace me and not only but finish the last mile like I felt like I won the Super Bowl,” said Trubow.
“Adam is like awesome, so I’m glad I’m being with him and running with him, pulling him all I can do,” said Bella Seifert, NM Special Olympics Athlete.
This year’s goal was to raise $100,000 for the team to compete at the 2026 Special Olympics USA Games in Minneapolis. So far, they have $85,805 in donations. “This money completely has an immediate impact with people with intellectual disabilities, all walks of life of disabilities in Special Olympics to participate in more and more events,” said Trubow.
He said the experience of ultra running was something he wanted to share with the athletes. “It was really magical, it was so special, we’re all holding hands and running together, that was the best moment of my life there,” said Harris. Trubow completed the race in 27 hours and 41 minutes before the 30-hour cutoff.
